Phenoxyethanol is a broad-spectrum preservative and antimicrobial agent primarily used to inhibit microbial growth. It is commonly found in skin care products, pharmaceuticals, and daily chemical products. Its core functions include extending the shelf life of products, preventing bacterial/fungal contamination, and being used as a topical antiseptic ingredient in the medical field.

Function and efficacy

1. Anti-corrosion and antibacterial

Phenoxyethanol effectively combats Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and certain fungi by disrupting microbial cell membranes and inhibiting enzyme activity. It exerts a stable preservative effect at concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 1%.

2. High safety

Compared to traditional preservatives such as parabens, phenoxyethanol has lower irritancy and is approved for use in cosmetics in regions such as the European Union and China. However, its concentration needs to be controlled (usually ≤1%) to avoid skin burning or sensitive reactions caused by high concentrations.

3. Medical auxiliary purposes

In the medical field, phenoxyethanol can be used in wound disinfectants, ear drops, etc., to help prevent local infections, but it should be used under the guidance of a doctor.

Scope of application

Skin care products: face cream, lotion, sunscreen, etc., to prevent microbial growth.

Daily chemical products: hand sanitizer, wet wipes, shampoo, etc.

Medical products: external disinfectant, postoperative care preparations, etc.

Phenoxyethanol is an efficient and relatively mild preservative ingredient at reasonable concentrations, but its effectiveness and safety need to be comprehensively evaluated in conjunction with specific formulations and usage scenarios.
